Vein Disease

Varicose veins are usually not visible to the naked eye and need to be examined with an ultrasound. About 25% of women and 15% of men suffer from the physical and/or social discomfort of varicose veins. 1 out of 2 people over the age of 50 report having this condition.

Veins on leg have leaflet valves to prevent blood from flowing backward. Leg muscles pump the veins to return blood to the heart, against the effects of gravity. When leg veins become large or the leaflets of the valves get destroyed, the blood starts to flow backward.

Did you know that varicose veins can cause:

  1. Spider veins

  2. Unsightly visible veins on the leg

  3. Swollen legs, muscle cramps, soreness or aching in the legs

  4. Tiredness, burning, throbbing, tingling or heaviness in the legs

  5. Soreness behind the knee, itching around the vein

  6. Brown discoloration of the skin(especially around the ankles)

  7. Leg Ulcers

Traditionally these veins were ‘stripped ‘ or taken out surgically. Now there are state of the art minimally invasive treatments available that help close these varicose veins without removing them. This helps improve flow and improves and alleviates symptoms.
